Dr Adam Sutton
Over more than a decade, Adam has led hundreds of UK pottery projects for commercial and academic clients, consistently delivering quality work on time and within budget. His track record includes pioneering research on Late Iron Age ceramic technology and five years on the committee of the Study Group for Roman Pottery (2019-2023). Adam recently led the pottery analysis for the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Road Improvement Scheme, one of the UK's largest-ever archaeological programmes, and in 2022, he led the AHRC-funded Crafts and Community initiative, blending archaeological research and modern creativity through pottery-making.
Adam is passionate about exploring the ways that material culture can tell us about the lives of people in the past, whether that be how they worked to make the objects we find, how they used those objects in their daily lives, or how their identities are reflected in the objects they were buried with. He believes that understanding the past is a force for great good in the present, contributing both to peoples’ ability to critically appreciate their place in the world, as well as to their wellbeing and sense of community.
“Adam was the lead pottery specialist within the A14 Huntingdon to Cambridge Road Improvement Scheme, one of the largest excavations ever undertaken in the UK. Assessing and analysing such a huge assemblage (almost 3 tonnes) was a massive undertaking and Adam successfully led the team to produce outstanding results on time and budget, and even managed to identify and research an entirely new Roman pottery industry in the process. He is a complete professional and a pleasure to work with.”
— Dr Alex Smith, Head of Post-excavation at Headland Archaeology and Project Manager for the A14 C2H Road Improvement Scheme
